ABSTRACTPreparation of the ‘Goethe/Incoming Correspondence’ collection for digitization presented unique challenges to the Goethe and Schiller Archive’s conservation workshop: in addition to coping with previously unexamined holdings under a tight deadline, a conservation concept also had to be developed quickly. This concept had to be tailored to the complex damage that the collection had sustained, but above all, it had to factor in its special historical significance and how it had been handed down. A concept was developed and implemented in close cooperation between the conservators and the Regestausgabe der Briefe an Goethe staff. (The Regestausgabe makes the entirety of the letters addressed to Goethe accessible in chronological order, provides information on their content, and places them in the context of Goethe's personal correspondence relations.) For letters hand-sewn into file folders, the current condition of the sewing was preserved for posterity, and loose letters were secured through conservation, whereby a colour code indicates the condition in which these letters were found.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Vorbereitung des Bestandes „Goethe / Eingegangene Briefe‘ für die Digitalisierung stellte die Restaurierungswerkstatt des Goethe- und Schiller-Archivs vor besondere Herausforderungen: neben der Bewältigung von bisher ungewohnten Mengen in einem vorgegebenen engen Zeitrahmen musste in kurzer Zeit auch ein Restaurierungskonzept entwickelt werden. Dieses sollte auf das komplexe Schadensbild des Bestandes zugeschnitten sein, aber vor allem auch die besondere historische Bedeutung des Bestandes und seiner Überlieferungsform berücksichtigen. In enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Restauratoren und Mitarbeitern der Regestausgabe der Briefe an Goethe konnte ein Konzept erarbeitet und umgesetzt werden. In 1990 she trained as a bookbinder at the Centre for Hand Binding at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design, formerly the Otto Dorfner Workshop. Since 1997, she has worked in the paper conservation workshop of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, where she trained as a conservator both internally and as an autodidact, helped by annual participation in various training opportunities (e.g., IADA) and internships in different workshops (e.g., Stuttgart Academy of Arts). Susanne co-developed the Guidelines for Conservation and Restoration in the Goethe and Schiller Archive in partnership with Maria Günther.Maria GüntherMaria Günther Born in 1960, after studying history and art history in Stuttgart and Florence (M.A. degree), Maria trained at the Scuola per l'Arte e il Restauro in Florence. She then worked for one and a half years at the Westphalian Industrial Museum in Dortmund/Bövinghausen. Maria held an ABM position as a historian at the Württemberg State Library, Department of Music. She worked as a conservator for 16 years at the German Literary Archives in Marbach and, since August 2008, at the Goethe and Schiller Archive in Weimar, Klassik Stiftung Weimar. Maria has been a IADA member since 1994.
