Resumo

A large array of drugs and methods for optimal sedation and pain control for critically ill patients are available. These include epidural and intrathecal narcotics, patient controlled analgesia, and an array of new sedative and narcotic agents. Critical care environments are particularly suited to use of these techniques and drugs because of the availability of close monitoring. After reading this article the practi-tioner should be in a better position to tailor an appropriate regimen of pain control and sedation for the critically ill patient.
