Every year, Selestra and her mother conduct the ritual that binds the souls of citizens to the king in exchange for a wish. If the citizen lives through the month, they can claim their wish, or even the king's immortality; if they die, their soul is forfeit. Nox Laederic, a revered soldier in King Seryth's army with a knack for survival and a thirst for vengeance, enters into the king's contract believing he can survive the month, avenge his murdered father, and put an end to Seryth's cruel reign. However, Nox's fate appears tied with Selestra's, as her vision of Nox's future death shows her dying alongside him, meaning the pair must learn to trust each other if they have any hope of surviving the month and building a better future for their world. Selestra and Nox narrate this story in alternating chapters, and the two have an amusing Han-and-Leia type of chemistry nurtured by their witty, sarcastic banter. Selestra is the true protagonist, though, with the resolution hinging on her satisfying character arc. Isolated and controlled her entire life, she must learn not only to trust others, but also, most importantly, herself. Fans of Marissa Meyer will like Christo's highly digestible writing style and the fast-paced action-adventure story that echoes modern classics like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Princess Bride.
