In comparison to its instrumental music, the Mannheim School’s music for theatrical dance has largely escaped detailed analysis. The article seeks to clarify the ways in which the specific parameters of the Palatine Court’s music encouraged and influenced the innovations of ballet pantomime and vice versa. Ballets by C. J. Toeschi, C. Cannabich, and G. J. Vogler form the basis for analyses that suggest a correlation between musical form and choreographic concepts. As a result, Mannheim could also be considered a significant center for ballet composition, until now a status primarily reserved for Vienna and Stuttgart.
