Resumo

Richard Wagner is often a point of reference in film music-scholars draw terminological parallels to his operas and composers quote his themes. His music can be heard not only in feature films but in animated cartoons, which were an integral part of pre-show programming during the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema (from the advent of sound to the decline of the studio system in the mid-fifties). And yet animated short subjects challenge established methods of musical analysis in film. Selected examples from Silly Symphonies and Merrie Melodies illustrate the versatility and flexibility of Wagner’s music, with its capacity to evoke the most divergent associations.
