Resumo

This work contributes to the literature that estimates racial and gender imbalances in Brazilian municipal political representation. For this, we use data from the 2016 and 2020 mayoral and councilor elections in order to investigate the extent to which black women, black men and white women are underrepresented in relation to white men in our local political system. Our analysis reveals high levels of imbalances, especially in the gender dimension. For mayors, the imbalances are high when we consider both candidacies and those elected. In the case of councilors, the imbalance is greater among the elected. Additionally, we found that there was a high inequality in the funding of campaigns in favor of white men in 2016, which reverts in favor of women in 2020. However, this change did not change the low levels of female representation in local politics.
