ResumoThe cartoonists and the Saverne Affair, 1913. The Saverne affair was a favorable opportunity for cartoonists to unbridle their biting sense of humour. Lieutenant Forstner had uttered insults and threats against Alsatian people. In the face of the agitation – however moderate they were-caused by these statements, the army gave orders of a nature disproportionate with the event. German cartoonists stigmatized Prussian militarism and its excessive measures. They took advantage of the circumstances to criticize the political system of the Reich. The Alsatian artists, first of all, Zislin in Dur’s Elsass” and Hansi, dealt with the Affair in a humorous way, denouncing its ridiculous aspects. The French cartoonists in a spirit of revenge condemning “German barbarity”, held the German army up to ridicule. One of the effects of these humorous activities was to reinforce nationalistic antagonisms.
