ResumoDuring 1999, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) promoted international monetary cooperation, exchange stability and orderly exchange arrangements; fostered economic growth and high levels of employment; and provided temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance-of-payments adjustment. The continued repercussions of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the spread of the financial stress to Brazil and the Russian Federation in 1998 posed challenges for IMF and the international community. Strong macroeconomic stabilization measures coupled with important structural reforms helped abate the crisis by the end of the fiscal year (1 May 1998-30 April 1999).
