ResumoThrough a revision in the literature by colonial chroniclers and by their first reviewers, 21 groups of Brazilian insects mentioned by the chroniclers were analyzed, among which stand out harmful insects: the burrowing flea, the biting midges, as well as the utilitarian insects such as the native bees. Among the 11 revised chroniclers’ texts, seven are from the 16th century: Staden, Thevet, Anchieta, Gândavo, Lery, Cardim, and Sousa. And four are from the beginning of the 17th: Abbeville, Evreux, Brandão, and Salvador. In relation to the number and the quality of the observations registered in the end of 16th century, the ones from Bahia by Gabriel Soares de Sousa stand out while the ones by Claude d’Abbeville, in Maranhão are remarkable in the beginning of the 17th.
