Resumo

The war in eastern Ukraine started long before Russia invaded. After the annexation of Crimea in 2014, separatists seized sizeable chunks of the mostly Russian-speaking border territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. By the beginning of this year, 14 000 people, including several thousand civilians, had died as a result of fighting in the region. During the filming of A House Made of Splinters, Lysychansk lay in the government-controlled portion of Luhansk, around 20 km from the frontline (it was recovered from the separatists in 2015). The mayhem that was let loose in February, 2022, was yet to come. But perhaps the subjects of this artistic and charming documentary were not taken by surprise. “In eastern Ukraine, people still feel the echo of war”, observes the voiceover. “Life has always been hard here.”
