Superheroes are disappearing off the streets of Paris, but their powers are found at the heart of crime all over the city, as a new drug gives its users momentary superhuman power. As a liaison officer to the retired superhero group Pack Royal and the only officer with extensive superhero connections, Moreau (Pio Marmaï) is assigned the case. With the high-profile case comes a new partner, Schaltzmann (Vimala Pons), meant to keep Moreau focused. Moreau’s introduction to the spectator at the beginning of Attal’s film portrays him as a washed-up, good-for-nothing, lazy cop who does not have enough coffee for a decent cup and shares his cereal bowl full of milk with his cat. As the film progresses, we realize that Moreau is in fact a good cop and a good man, just a little unorthodox and very fond of candy. Moreau uses his connections to the members of the Pack Royal to uncover the connections between the missing superheroes and the new drug. A psychopath, Naja, who had his hypnotic powers stripped at the age of ten out of fear for his safety and for the safety of those around him, seeks revenge and to regain supernatural powers. He uses the blood of imprisoned superheroes to create the drug that gives normal individuals powers. Moreau must go head to head with this evil man. However, with no powers he would stand no chance. For Moreau, the journey to find the leader of the drug distribution ring gives him the incentive he needs to help him accept and master the powers he has been hiding from the police department for years. Moreau is drugged, captured, and shot as Naja attempts to collect him as a specimen from which to steal powers. However, Naja is unsuccessful due to the intervention of Schaltzmann and the remaining members of the retired superhero group Pack Royal. In an epic, bloody battle Schaltzmann, Moreau, and the Pack Royal infiltrate Naja’s headquarters, free the captured superheroes, defeat Naja’s men, and deliver them to the police. Naja is literally the last man standing, holding a young superhero he abducted and drugged. Out of options, Naja overdoses on his own superhero drug cocktail, forcing Moreau to publicly reveal himself as a superhero in order to defeat him. The film ends shortly after the world learns of this new superhero, Titan, who eliminated Naja as a threat to the community and who, with the help of his close friends, is able to continue to hide his real identity. Comment je suis devenu super-héros is an enjoyable film about the rise to power of a new superhero and the supporting roles that former superheroes take on once they are out of the business. Attal effectively uses flashbacks placed periodically [End Page 243] throughout the film to explain Moreau’s past and his resistance to exploring and mastering his powers. Attal’s film is a successful addition to the popular genre of superhero films.
