Shoulder Injury and Treatment

Please join me in welcoming Dr. George C. Balazs as a new Associate Editor of Arthroscopy. Dr. Balazs is a Commander in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, and he graduated summa cum laude, phi beta kappa with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Tulane University. He earned his doctor of medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii. He completed his internship in orthopaedic surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and his residency at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He completed a research fellowship at the United States Naval Academy, and a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Service, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. Dr. Balazs currently serves as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. He is also the regional leader for military orthopaedic surgery and podiatry in the Tidewater region of Virginia. He previously served as an assistant team physician at the United States Naval Academy, and as assistant team physician for the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Red Bulls while in training. He has deployed overseas for the Navy three times, twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. He began reviewing for Arthroscopy in 2019 and joined the Editorial Board in 2021. He also is a peer reviewer for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Winner of several research awards for his published studies, his interests focus on knee cartilage, postoperative opioid use, and military-related joint trauma. He has been married to his wife, Stefani, for 16 years and has two daughters, Jazz and Rhys. In the rare moments he is not working, he enjoys target shooting with his family and being generally sedentary.
