Resumo

There is Warrant for our inventing the designation, Prince of Amateurs, for Sharaku. Without known professional training or experience in print designing, he emerged from his aristocratic obscurity, created one hundred thirty-six sophisticated and original actor portraits, and ended his career as abruptly and mysteriously as he had begun it. With none of the marks of an honest pedestrian servant to that hard master, art, and with sublime indifference to the likes and dislikes of the proletarian audience for which his prints were made, he came and went like a scornful meteor, leaving behind him a wake of fire.
