L'inculturation est un nouveau terme apparu dans l'Eglise catholique durant les années 1970 pour exprimer la relation entre l'Evangile et les cultures. Les missionnaires, en portant l'Evangile, transforment les cultures locales et se laissent transformer par elles. Ce terme a été préféré à celui, plus sociologique, d'acculturation. Cet article retrace l'histoire de l'apparition de ce concept, à travers les écrits de son principal promoteur : le Père Pedro ARRUPE, Supérieur Général de la Compagnie de Jésus. Inculturation is a new term which appeared in the Catholic Church, in the 1970s, to express the relationship between the Gospel and the cultures. The missionaries, by revealing the Gospel, transform the local cultures and let themselves be transformed by them. This term has been preferred to the one of acculturation, which is more sociological. This article relates the history of the advent of this concept through the writings of its principal promoter : Father Pedro Arrupe, General Superior of the Society of Jesus.
