ResumoThis research includes an analysis of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup coverage by Brazilian sports and news websites (Globo Esporte, UOL Esporte, ESPN, Torcedores.com, and Placar). The main objective is to identify the space given to the tournament by those outlets, since there’s been a considerable increase in television coverage, compared to previous editions, with matches being transmitted by TV Globo, the leading broadcaster in the country. The essay discusses the relationship between the concepts of “powerful audience” and news criteria to interpret the quantitative and qualitative growth in news coverage of women’s football, a sport that, up until recently, was practically invisible on the mainstream media agenda. The methodological approach was the thematic analysis used to process and classify the 926 news broadcasts during the World Cup, from which it was possible to identify thematic patterns and recurrences in the media coverage of the Cup, as well as disruptions from previous editions of the tournament, both with regard to the representation of athletes and the sport practiced by women.
