Resumo

This research investigates the education process of children and youth from the MST settlement Pirituba II, located in the regions of Itapeva and Itaberá, in South-eastern São Paulo This chapter is about the Project of Rural Settlement (PRS) which comes under the jurisdiction of the Fundação ITESP which is linked to the São Paulo State Secretariat of Justice. The project arose from a land occupation instigated by peasant families, during the 1980s who had organized themselves as rural trades people and pastoralists in the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) – popularly known in English as the Landless Movement. It was here that the question of basic education actively delivered in the settlement was applied in practice as a result of the fight for landless rights organised, especially, by the MST. Since the initial occupation of the Fazenda Pirituba, (A fazenda is a large landed estate of hundreds of hectares of arable land – they emerged from the period of colonialism between the 16th & 18th centuries when they were referred to as plantations owned by powerful colonisers and the church housing hundreds of thousands of slaves used for both agricultural, and household labour. Brasil was one of the last countries in the world to abolish slavery.) the settled families have fought for the development of written texts imbued with the philosophy of the movement and liberation theology to educate the young and upcoming generations of activists of the settlement. The qualitative participatory research offers clear insights into the process of transformative education in the grass roots settlements of the MST.
