After the regent’s death, his sons inherit their father’s war, but new regent Caspian—reclusive and possibly mad—leaves his younger brother Talon to lead the war efforts. While on a mission against House Kraken, Talon comes to blows with Darling Seabreak, who simply wants to rescue her adoptive father, the Kraken regent, but instead is captured by Talon. It is soon revealed that she is the last surviving member of House Sphinx, and Caspian means [End Page 223] to see her House restored with her as its regent. All of them wish for the war to end, but secrets and intrigues abound, and the mistrust between them threatens the very peace they are trying to achieve. This fast-paced, action-filled fantasy reads like a mix of Game of Thrones and Avatar: The Last Airbender. First-person narration alternates between Talon and Darling, and while each is likeable, they have little agency in the story. The real protagonist is the enigmatic, mercurial Caspian, whose plans and whims drive the plot: Talon and Darling serve primarily to be the Nick Carraways to his Gatsby. Caspian’s machinations build to an exciting conclusion, and readers will be left wanting more, so it’s good news that this is the first of a duology.
