Resumo

As Studio Ghibli temporarily shuttered its productions in 2014, important questions arose about the studio’s future. This final chapter takes the example of the Ni No Kuni franchise as a lens through which to consider how the production culture at Studio Ghibli has been dispersed into Japan’s wider media worlds. This videogame-based franchise, whose first game was made in collaboration by games company Level-5 and Studio Ghibli, has continued long after the hiatus in Ghibli’s production work. It therefore offers a good example of how staff, concepts and whole genres are rippling out from Studio Ghibli as its staff members have had to take up new roles in new studios and even in new forms of media. In this way, focusing on Ni No Kuni allows us to think about the legacy of Studio Ghibli to a wide range of media, and not just within Japanese animation.
