ResumoThe implementation of the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde [SUS]) was a milestone for Brazil. Nearly four decades after the 8th National Health Conference declared that health is a universal right and a governmental responsibility, as enshrined in Brazil's 1988 Federal Constitution, the SUS is the best way to address Brazil's health needs, protect the country against health emergencies, and allocate resources to better serve the most deprived and marginalised populations. 1 Castro MC Massuda A Almeida G et al.
