Resumo

This work aims to carry out a systematic review on hydrops, associating its higher frequency in brachiocephalic bitches. Searches were carried out in scientific electronic libraries using the words “dropsy” and “bitch” as search terms. The studies found were analyzed and submitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria that made it possible to narrow down the choice of those that met the central objectives of the research. In total, 69 publications were found in the researched digital scientific libraries, of which only ten met the inclusion criteria and were used to support the study. In the works listed, similarities were found in the events and procedures in each case described, among them, the development of dystocia triggered by the presence of hydrops, ultrasound examination for diagnosis, surgical intervention, and the presence of stillbirths and/or death of the neonate. minutes after birth. It was also found that of the 11 bitches diagnosed with hydrops in these studies, six are brachycephalic, reaffirming the greater occurrence of this pathology in dogs of such conformation. In this way, it is essential to know the genetic predisposition of each breed and the level of kinship between the animals before carrying out the crossing. Added to this, it is essential to carry out the gestational monitoring of the bitch through ultrasound, with the aim of diagnosing any change in the fetuses, from development to delivery.
