ABSTRACT 10 years on from the publication of the Francis report, the nursing profession is facing unprecedented challenges; Robert Francis has recently sounded the alarm that the NHS is currently facing 'the Mid Staffordshire scandal playing out on a national level'. In this perspective, we consider the opportunities missed in the last decade in the attempt to secure safe staffing in nursing.
