Resumo

Schell was investigating the physiological mechanisms shaping coyote boldness, and as part of that, he wanted to figure out how coyotes navigated life in urban areas. For closer insights, his aim was to catch coyotes to affix GPS collars. In Denver, he and his colleagues put out a live trap, but the coyotes promptly ghosted the location for 3 weeks."They are really smart and stubborn as hell," he says.Eventually, Schell and Breck admitted defeat and retrieved the trap.Driving away, they covered less than 50 feet before five coyotes appeared in the clearing, staring at them with mouths agape."I was like, they are flipping the bird at us right now," Schell laughs.Like many urban species, coyotes are adaptable, denning under the front porches of homes and moving through the shadows of green spaces at night.Schell chose to study them after hearing a story about a coyote that sauntered into a Quiznos sandwich shop in Chicago and lay down in the drink cooler for nearly an hour.Schell, now assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley, wants to understand what mechanisms underlie coyotes' movement and behavior in urban environments. Many factors shape how individual animals, plants, and other species disperse and interact across a city.Patterns of green
