ResumoWestern Sahara is a territory comprising two historical regions, Río de Oro and Saguía el-Hamra, colonised by Spain from 1884, when a protectorate was declared over Río de Oro. In 1963, the territory – then known as Spanish Sahara – was included in the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories under Chapter XI of the Charter of the United Nations. Its status as such, with Spain as administering Power, was accordingly clear from at least that year until 1976. Its status before 1884 was famously examined in a 1975 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. Its status since 1976 remains contested.
