ResumoEngels published in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung 1848 and 1849 a couple of articles approved by Marx, where he doubted the ability of several smaller Slav people of Central Europe to participate in the revolution. Since then, these articles have widely been viewed as a mistake. Both the publishers of the Russian edition of Marx’s and Engels’ Collected Works and Roman Rosdolsky have reproached Engels (and indirectly Marx) of not understanding the national aspirations of small Slav people. However, a closer reading of these notorious articles show clearly, that the main concern of Engels was elsewhere. The real problem was Pan-Slavism which was used by the Czarist Russian imperialism as a political tool.
