ResumoThis article draws a comparison between two representative films of Brazilian black cinema, Ganga Zumba and Xica da Silva, both directed by Cacá Diegues. It seeks to emphasize the contrast in the representation of black men and women in the two films. While Ganga Zumba presents the collective organization in the fight for freedom, Xica da Silva reveals the sexualization of black women as a strategy for their liberation. The analysis of the films also allows us to observe an image policy on the bodies of black people that is consistent with national perspectives in their historical contexts.
