ResumoThis essay is divided in two parts. The first part takes into consideration the work of Eduardo Galeano, Juan Villoro, and Jorge Valdano with regard to the relationship between literature and soccer. The second part grows out of Galeanoss position that “soccer and nation are always intertwined” and focuses on Pedro Angel Palou?s novel El último campeonato mundial (1997) and how, despite depicting a future in which nearly all nations are extinct, soccer still has a nationalist and unifying effect. In such a way, even while taking into account postulates found in the Manifiesto Crack (to which Palou is affiliated), postulates that deny Mexico and national identity as literary themes, the interpretation presented by this essay implicates that though there is no overt nationalism present, the novel contains elements that enable a nostalgia for what a nation represents.
