ResumoThe village of Rockwood, the centre of the main population base of the Township of Eramosa, is located about an hour’s drive west of Toronto. Rockwood’s population is about 2,000. The total figure for the township is less than 5,500. From June 19 to July 1, 1990, The Eramosa Community Play Project (ECPP), in conjunction with Colway Theatre Trust of England (CTT), presented The Spirit of Shivaree, a community play fusing historical reflection with contemporary issues, and involving a core group of professionals, 130 local performers, 20 crew and almost 1,000 volunteers. The performances utilized the ruins of a 19th-century woollen mill located in the Rockwood Conservation Area and were based on a script by area resident Dale Hamilton with music and lyrics by James Gordon. The production budget was over $100,000 and, with every performance sold out, approximately 3,500 people witnessed the event. The entire project, including creation of the script, spanned a period of almost two years.
