Resumo

Inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system include brain trauma, stroke, neuroinfection and autoimmune diseases represented by multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. Inflammatory insults to the brain trigger stereotypic glial responses in the form of reactive gliosis. This glial response is a part of tissue remodelling aimed at localising the damage and promoting post-lesional functional remodelling, regeneration and compensation. The damaged area of the nervous tissue is substituted with a fibrotic scar produced by stromal cells, whereas reactive astrocytes form perilesional barrier protecting healthy nervous tissue.
