Resumo

The Stargate franchise occupies a strange and arguably neglected place in the library of sf, exploring many of the familiar themes of the genre with multiple series and films yet typically not a part of the discourse of scholars or fandoms outside of its own ardent fanbase. While the military focus of Stargate can and should be a major draw for scholarship, especially as one which features a pro-US military perspective within a global discourse about science and politics that I argue walks a line between benevolent humanitarianism and military domination, an equally important endeavor would be to look further at the franchise’s novel methods of exploring the future – or at least, the futuristic – while remaining grounded in the twenty-first century.
