Resumo

Although the agricultural sector faces a number of challenges stemming from climate change, the adoption of precision agriculture practices appears to be able to mitigate its negative effects. The aim of this study was to assess farmers’ adoption decision process towards proposed precision agricultural practices in potato production systems in Northern Greece. In order to do so, a bio-economic model based on mathematical programming methods was developed and applied to three representative farms in Kato Nevrokopi, simulating two policy scenarios. The model integrates the current management practices of the farming systems and their relevant characteristics and aspires to examine farmers’ intentions to adopt the proposed novel practices under agronomic, environmental, and policy constraints. The results highlighted that the adoption of precision agricultural practices would lead to significantly better economic and environmental outcomes. Furthermore, different levels of incentives can be efficiently targeted to encourage the adoption of new practices and secure the sustainability of the agricultural systems.
