ResumoA Portuguese cultural manifestation with a long tradition, the Zés Pereiraslanded in Rio de Janeiro, around the middle of the 19th century, along with the massive immigration of Portuguese to Brazil. The Zés Pereiras played a fundamental role in the Carioca Carnival for at least 60 years (1850-1910) and are considered by Brazilian historiography to be the forerunners of the streetand popularCarnival in the country. This article aims to analyse the transposition of Zés Pereiras, from the North of Portugal pilgrimages and processions to the Brazilian Carnival, in addition to discussing the characteristics of this carnivalesque Zé Pereira
