AbstractIn July 2023, a military coup d’état took place in Niger in which several factions of the armed forces seized power and suspended the constitution. President Mohamed Bazoum was placed under house arrest, and the junta appears to have a firm grip on power. Mediation efforts for a return to constitutional order continue. The coup reflects mounting security problems and internal power struggles. It is part of a trend of military coups in the region since 2019, indicating weakening Western influence and increased engagement by Russia.
