ISBN 9781536219401 $17.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-7 yrs Aarav tends to barrel through life, running, racing, and skipping, while his beloved Thatha takes things a bit slower. Grandson and grandfather get along just fine most of the time, but their afternoon making of chai frustrates Aarav as Thatha insists the drink's warm deliciousness only comes with the right prep time. When Thatha sprains his foot in a bad fall, Aarav decides to make the tea, but each attempt misses the mark: tossing in all the ingredients at once just makes a soupy mess, straining the tea too fast results in a pale, milky liquid, and forgetfully skipping the spices means the resulting drink is terribly bland. At last, Aarav remembers that the most important ingredient is time, and, following his grandfather's guidance, he makes a delicious cup of chai. LaRocca's playful text is warmly inviting and accessibly straightforward, easily conveying the love between grandfather and grandson despite their different approaches to their daily tempo. Aarav bounces through the soft hues and buoyant textures of Rawat's digital art, with wide-eyed expressions accompanying toothy grins or appreciative smiles. Heat up a pot and follow the included recipe for masala chai for a cuddly lapsit or lulling storytime celebrating intergenerational bonds.
