Resumo

Significance The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc has rejected the proposal. This follows a July 26-27 coup overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum, who remains in custody with his family. ECOWAS has threatened military action if Bazoum is not restored to power. Impacts Financial sanctions may mean Niger’s junta could struggle to pay salaries in the coming weeks, undermining their support base. Regional border closures will complicate humanitarian aid delivery to Niger. An intervention could provoke violent demonstrations in northern Nigeria.
