ResumoEthnoprimatological information about owl monkeys is relatively scant compared to other Neotropical primates. Nocturnality is the characteristic that modulates the interaction between owl monkeys and humans. In general terms, owl monkeys are a not preferred primate prey. In different Indigenous societies, these monkeys are a taboo food for young people. Aotus is kept as a primate pet; however, not as commonly as other monkeys. Ethnoecologically, owl monkeys are nocturnal territorial dwellers. They are also described as small-sized, long-tailed primates, with particularly large eyes. Regarding cosmologies, owl monkeys are regularly associated with astronomical events and related to negative connotations. Apart from Aotus, kinkajous (Potos flavus) and olingos (Bassaricyon spp.) are also often ethnoclassified as "night monkeys."
