Resumo

In academia and industry, the concept of the digital twin is becoming increasingly relevant to the fourth industrial revolution. While enabling technologies, such as visual computing, have their own set of established concepts and applications, the concept of digital twins is still in debate, as both industry experts and scholars agree that such a concept has its applications not only for production systems but in an array of purposes, including digital heritage. This paper aims to investigate theoretical and practical links between trends in digital heritage and applying digital twin (DT). This study uses design science research (DSR) to develop a low-cost conceptual framework for developing a digital twin for the Fortaleza de São João (Fortress of São João) in Rio de Janeiro. This framework enables technologies, especially visual computing and standardized data formats for the heritage. The implications of this study provide practical and forward-looking contributions to advance knowledge about the creation of a digital replica of the current fortress state by digital twin technology, regarding the military historical site and cultural heritage. Furthermore, the study also suggests that digital twins could be used to preserve and share cultural heritage, as well as to make cultural heritage more accessible to the public. The paper concludes with a call for action and suggests some suggestions for the future.
