ResumoTo better manage its regionally-distributed aviation resources, Naval History and Heritage Command’s Underwater Archaeology Branch (NHHC-UA) has taken a more proactive approach in recent years account for CONUS aircraft losses. With expanded survey capabilities and building on years of archival research, UA is developing long-term projects to manage aircraft heritage and combine these with regional archaeological studies with various partners. While UA has routinely been able to address aircraft discoveries since its inception in 1994, the majority of the undertakings and issues that the branch has responded to were often individual cases. In the past several years, for example, UA has undertaken site visits to address emergent aircraft issues such as: the assessment of a submerged Dauntless to investigate a potential Sunken Military Craft Act violation; assessment of a submerged F6F Hellcat, and to identify a terrestrial SBD Dauntless crash.
