ResumoSignificance The next general election is expected in January. The health of BNP leader Khaleda Zia, under house arrest, is reportedly deteriorating seriously. Separately, the United States has said it is imposing visa restrictions on Bangladeshis involved in “undermining the democratic election process”. Impacts Bangladesh will try to strengthen its relations with India and China as its US ties take a downturn. Despite pressure on foreign exchange reserves, a major economic crisis is unlikely. Infrastructure development will be a key plank of the AL’s campaign for re-election.
