Resumo

A case of very low temperatures (down to about -30 • C) at the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF), King George Island, on July 1995, is discussed based on local weather data, satellite imagery and analyses from a widely used numerical weather model. The situation resulted from the advection of cold air from the frozen Weddell Sea, along the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula, reaching afterwards the South Shetland Islands.Limitations in the numeric model products, such as differences of 15 • C and 17 hPa, in relation to actual surface data, result from the use of a simplified Antarctic topography in the model and the lack of data from the surrounding frozen seas. The importance of the ''barrier'' winds along the east side of the Peninsula and a peculiar positioning of low pressure centres in the region are stressed in the forecast of temperature fall, in the EACF region.
