ResumoAbstract When, seven years after his death, Shakespeare’s colleagues John Heminges and Henry Condell put together the first collected edition of his plays, the 1623 Folio, they prefaced it with an address ‘To the great Variety of Readers’. As good businessmen, they begin with sales talk-’whatever you do, buy!’-but as literary advisers they have but one thing to say to Shakespeare’s readers: ‘Read him, therefore; and again, and again’.
