Resumo

This article offers a tentative plan for reconstructing the lost library of the Roman humanist Pomponio Leto (1428-1498). Although we have no inventory of Pomponio's books and only a few were reportedly left at the time of his death, we can reconstruct at least part of the physical library, that is, autograph manuscripts and annotated editions identified by his distinctive hand, and of the virtual library, that is, books which, on the basis of various other evidence, we can reasonably assign to his collection. This project draws upon diverse sources: published articles on his library, monographs on individual manuscripts and printed editions, library catalogues and registers of book loans, prefaces and dedicatory epistles, and letters to and from humanist friends. A fuller knowledge of Pomponio's library, a library on the move, will enrich our understanding of his scholarship, his wide network of friends, patrons, and students, and the diffusion of his work throughout, and beyond, Italy.
