Resumo

The article discusses how modernism, nationalism, and compositional technique interacted in Brazilian composer César Guerra-Peixe’s work. Three main themes are developed: (1) modernism in Brazil, avant-garde, and progressivism; (2) the idea that Brazilian music was marked by the “limitations” of the country’s musical milieu; and (3) compositional technique and Brazilian culture. This three-fold discussion offers a privileged vantage point from which to consider the debates around Brazilian modernism and Guerra-Peixe’s unique position in it. The discussion is based on historical research, making use of letters, interviews, and articles by the actors involved.
