The quality of any scientific journal relies on a high caliber peer-review process. Reviewers invest their time altruistically to help authors improve their manuscripts. They are selected based on their expertise, and each review received by the Editors of the EJVES is scored according to its quality from 1-100 points. We monitor all reviewers’ performance and each January the Editorial Board (EB) is renewed based on strict criteria. Those who perform a sufficient number of reviews, and have a mean score above 70, become candidates to be invited to the renewed EB. They can serve on the EB a maximum of nine years, but many former EB members continue to support the journal for many years after their term. Diversity is an important issue within the ESVS and the EJVES, and we have an historical shortage of women in our profession. To improve the presence of female reviewers the editors have decided to always try to always include at least one women among those invited to review a paper. With this policy the proportion of women on the EB and amongst the editors will increase over time. When we select new section editors we prioritize the best reviewers and members of the EB, making the diversity of the invited reviewers a strategic issue. We have been impressed by the high quality of the reviews undertaken during the time period October 18, 2022 until October 17, 2023. The reviewers have helped us to assess the quality of the papers, their novelty and methodological robustness. The Editors would like to pay tribute to the 391 reviewers who are listed in alphabetical order and who completed a total of 2384 reviews. This is approximately the same number as during 2022. We were also impressed by the fact that 78% of the reviews were submitted within the deadline, which is usually three weeks, although sometimes shorter when we publish papers fast track. The editors have made a great effort to increase the number of papers that are desk rejected, without peer review. Today about 50% of the submitted full length articles are rejected in this way. This serves two purposes: the authors get a quicker reply, and the precious time of the reviewers is focused on papers that have a potential of being published in the journal. It also results in more work for the editors. In most editorial decisions at least two editors are involved, another reason for an increased workload, but still felt worthwhile in order to improve the decisions and to share the often difficult responsibility of deciding which papers to publish, and which to reject. The papers submitted to the journal, are always improved by the critical analyses and constructive suggestions made by the reviewers. Thus, the overall quality of the EJVES can to a large extent be attributed to the work of the reviewers listed below.
