There appears to be a sex difference in rates of PTSD, with women nearly three times as likely as men to have a lifetime diagnosis. A number of neurobiological systems have been implicated in the pathophysiology of PTSD, including alterations in the noradrenergic, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the gamma-aminobutyric acid/glutamate, serotonin, and dopamine systems. PTSD pathology is dominated by disruptions in cognition or memory, which are reflected in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria. By definition, external environmental factors play a key role in PTSD. References Ahrens , J. , & Rexford , L. ( 2002 ). Cognitive processing therapy for incarcerated adolescents with PTSD .
