ResumoThis study investigated the characteristics of visual behavior during judging valid strikes in skilled kendo fighters.A total of 19 expert and 19 novice kendo fighters were asked to judge validity of strikes for Men (Kendo head armor), Do (side trunk covered by a stomach and chest protector), or Kote (lower forearm covered by a gauntlet).Simultaneously, the participants' eye movements were recorded at 30 Hz, and the location where their gaze was directed was identified.Additionally, the pupil area was calculated for each frame. Both expert and novice fighters tended to focus on a striker's Shinai (a sword) during the phase from 900 ms to 600 ms before striking, and on the striking site during the phase from the time of striking to 300 ms after striking. However, during the phase from 600 ms before strike to just before strike, the expert fighters tended to switch their gaze from striker's Shinai to the striking site earlier than novices.Furthermore, the pupil areas of the expert fighters were correlated with their years of experience when judging the validity of strike to the Men.The gaze behavior specific to expert kendo fighters, such as looking at the striking area during the phase just before striking with paying too much attention, may be related to their superior judgment of valid strikes. 早期公開
