Resumo

City-building games (CBGs) are a popular type of game. Researchers and teachers have been exploring the potential of CBCs for learning and support planning systems. Cities: Skylines (C:S) is one of the contemporary games showing more potential for these purposes, but the analog version of the game has been ignored. The digital and analog versions of C:S were adapted and tested with undergraduate and master students (n = 17) of urban and regional planning courses from two different polytechnic institutes in Portugal. Participants considered the analog version more fun and collaborative (decision-making), but the digital version was better for testing creative solutions and simulating realistic cities. Analyzing the players' perspectives and game design elements of each game allowed us to address the potential and limitations of each game platform for teaching and use as a planning support system. Our findings also contribute to developing future collaborative playable experiences in general.
