This article aims to present the literary writing of Lourenço Mutarelli, situating it in the context of contemporary Brazilian literature, pointing out aspects related to his literary work, from works such as The art of producing effect without cause (2008) and The smell of the drain (2002).For the theoretical discussions, authors such as Candido ( 2006), Schøllhammer ( 2009) Kayser ( 2009) and Pisani (2012) were used.Through the reading of his texts, it is verified that the author's writing is marked by the construction of characters with psychological problems, by the presence of the grotesque, introduced by atypical places and characters, of unusual or unexpected appearances and habits.As for language, it is marked by emptiness, the use of sineths, and expressive semantic load.Still on the various observed aspects that represent his literature, we highlight the way in which he relates image and word, which gives a particular place to the writer in the midst of the multiplicity of contemporary literary forms.
