Resumo

The article examines the influence of the Iberian world on the development of the utopian genre in France and the United Provinces in the 17th century. While the impact of Utopia in early modern Spain has been frequently studied, less attention has been paid to the influence of the Iberian world on the imaginary travel accounts written and published in the context of European overseas expansion (16th-17th centuries). In view of this, the article examines the presence of textual images of the Catholic monarchy and its overseas domains in the French utopian accounts published in the aforementioned period. The article also explores the possible causes behind the invisibility of Iberian influence on the utopias of Gabriel Foigny, Denis Veiras and other authors in historiographical and literary studies.
