Resumo

Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society is one of the premier journals of feminist scholarship. The journal was launched by the University of Chicago Press to publish emerging scholarship about women that is routinely ignored by mainstream journals. This essay traces Signs' contributions to political studies from its founding in 1975 to the present. It examines how interdisciplinary feminist scholarship expanded understandings of the political and illuminated power dynamics in domains deemed apolitical by mainstream political science. It surveys theoretical and methodological innovations that challenge key tenets of positivism, identify new modes of evidence, and offers an alternative conception of objectivity that rejects the pretensions of scientism, as well as excessive philosophical generalization. It explores how feminist inquiry generates theories, concepts, and analytical categories that subvert hegemonic interests and foster social change.
