ResumoBased on the desmonumentalizing action directed at the statue honoring Borba Gato, which happened in São Paulo, Brazil, by mid-2021, this text highlights the reciprocal interactions between monuments (and other memorial objects), social agents and urban environments. Therefore, from examining conflicts of memory in public space, we reflect on which objects and discussions regarding memorial culture are brought into dialogue. For this discussion, we draw upon ethnographic data produced in Rio de Janeiro, in digital environments, and the analysis of press materials related to the addressed episodes. In addition to Borba Gato's statue, we investigate a set of objects, images, and events surrounding Marielle Franco and the anti-monument in honor of Carlos Marighella.
